CS Event December 2013 The Trust held its third CardiacSmart event, to recognise those who have made outstanding contributions to raising awareness and promoting heart health across the North West. The CardiacSmart initiative, born from the Chain of Survival Partnership in conjunction with the British Heart Foundation (BHF), aims to extend the coverage of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) within local communities across the North West, as well as training individuals in basic life support skills. The Trust was joined by Gail Sargerson, British Heart Foundation Area Development Manager, who spoke of the importance of heart health before handing over to Sara Harris and Cheryl Pickstock, County Co-ordinators for the Chain of Survival team, and Bob Williams, NWAS Chief Executive, to present the awards. Guests included, Cllr Denis Murphy, Congleton Town Deputy Mayor, as well as two cardiac arrest survivors, whose life savers were recognised with awards. The 25 organisations awarded on the day included: Cumbria Matterdale and District Community First Responders - Gold Cedar House School - Gold Endmoor and District Community First Responders - Silver Mallerstang Parish Meeting - Silver Lancashire St Michael and St John's RC Primary School - Gold Ribble Valley Community First Responders - Gold Parbold and Newburgh Community First Responders - Gold The ADAM Appeal - Silver Fylde Coast Community First Responders - Silver Greater Manchester Hand on Heart Charity - Gold Burnage First Responder Team - Gold British Gas - Gold British Red Cross Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside - Gold Rivington and Blackrod High School - Gold Bolton Mountain Rescue Team - Silver Cheshire Northwich and Winsford Heartstart - Gold Warrington Collegiate - Gold Knutsford Town - Gold Congleton First Responders and Congleton Town Council - Gold Marton and District CE Aided Primary School - Bronze Delamere C of E Academy - Bronze Merseyside The Vocational College - Gold Cowley International College - Gold Wirral Borough Council Beach Lifeguard Service - Gold Catch22 Cheshire - Bronze The Trust also took the opportunity to present recipients of its Life Saver Award - which recognises members of the public who have made outstanding efforts to save the life of a person suffering a cardiac arrest. Winners included an 11 year old girl, as well as someone who had completed basic life support training just a week prior to saving someone's life.
